Today we tested new third-party unlocking software called Dell Streak Unlocker on Unlock Streak and we're quite impressed. Within minutes our Streak was unlocked. Unlike Rebel SIM, which doesn’t unlock the phone permanently (upon removing Rebel SIM, the phone is locked again), this unlock is permanent and works on all Android versions. Jailbreaking or other alteration methods are not required. Instead, the Dell Streak Unlocker reads the real unlock code that Dell stored on the phone and makes it visible on your PC screen. Once the unlock code is shown, all it takes is to insert a non-original SIM card to enter the code into your phone and the device is unlocked for good. You can upgrade or wipe the phone or install whatever software you want. It will remain unlocked!

Let’s take a closer look.

Before unlocking, you can download the unlocker for free to run a compatibility test on your Streak to tell you whether your Streak can be unlocked or not. If yes, you can go ahead and buy the $29 registration code to do the actual unlock.

The software works on Windows 7, Vista, and XP (32-bit or 64-bit) and it install all necessary drivers automatically. In total, it took us 2 clicks to retrieve the unlock code from the phone once the software was installed on our PC. Easy enough. The phone then rebooted and prompted for the unlock code. We got our Streak on Amazon without signing any contract. It came locked to o2. After unlocking the unit, we had it working with a Lycamobile SIM card.

So why use this software instead of trying to get the unlock code from the carrier? Put simply, carriers only give out codes if you are eligible for it. Usually they look at your account and if you have been using their services long enough, you get the unlock code for free IF they have it available. This brings us to the next point. The unlock code for your particular Streak is based on the phone’s IMEI number, which is a 15-17 digit long unique identification number of the device. If that IMEI number is not stored in the carrier’s unlock database, a code will not be available. We’ve seen this happening from time to time, which leaves the owner of the phone without a choice but to seek some third party unlock service.

So far we’ve seen three ways to get your Dell Streak unlocked. First, carriers may give you the unlock code. Second, if that doesn’t work, you can use a Rebel SIM II but it doesn’t actually unlock the phone permanently. And third, you can use UnlockStreak’s Dell Streak Unlocker. We recommend you try it out yourself for free at the link below.

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://dellstreakhacks.com/dell-streak-7-needs-android-3-0-honeycomb-better-battery-life.html"></g:plusone>

Dell Streak 7, the company’s 7-inch tablet device, boasts a powerful dual-core processor, but needs Android 3.0 ('Honeycomb') and better battery life to be a true brawle

Dell's 5-inch Streak, released to the U.S. market in August 2010, suffered from something of an identity crisis. Was it a tablet competitor to Apple’s iPad, despite the smaller touch-screen? Or did its calling ability make it more of an Android smartphone, on par with the Samsung Galaxy S? Dell obviously hoped its new baby would appeal to an audience in the market for both types of device—the risk being that, in attempting to hit that sweet spot between the two, the Streak would end up an also-ran in the tablet and smartphone categories.

Dell’s Streak 7 suffers no such crisis. It seems clearly meant to compete within the tablet category, and specifically with the Samsung Galaxy Tab and Research In Motion’s upcoming PlayBook, both of which also include 7-inch screens. Like its predecessor and the other Android-based tablets currently on the market, the Streak 7 runs Android 2.2 (“Froyo”), which was developed for smartphones (and smaller screens). Dell is promising “over-the-air” software updates in the future, presumably to the upcoming, tablet-optimized Android 3.0 (“Honeycomb”), and that could change the user experience considerably. In the meantime, all the quirks of Android 2.2 on a larger-screen device are pretty apparent.

Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Dell Streak 7 is a handsome, middle-of-the-road tablet. It weighs just under a pound. The 7-inch screen, paired with the smoothly curved bezels, offers a comfortable one-handed grip—provided you have a hand on the larger side. The textured backing provides a little bit of friction on smooth surfaces, and the Gorilla Glass front will presumably resist at least some damage; it survived four 3-foot and 5-foot test drops onto a hardwood floor with no cracking or chipping. (As always, dropping your expensive mobile device is not recommended.)

Whereas the original Dell Streak featured three mechanical buttons along its topmost rim—camera, power and volume—the Streak 7 offers only power and volume. Like the original Streak, this larger edition relies on a PDMI (Portable Digital Media Interface) connector with a 30-pin receptacle, connected to a USB port and AC adaptor. Both Streaks’ design is such that the connector takes a bit of fumbling to slot into the tablet, but that’s a comparatively minor quibble—far more minor, say, than the Streak 7’s seeming inability to charge when plugged via USB into my ThinkPad.

The front of the Streak 7 offers three capacitive buttons: Back, Menu and Home. This is an Android device standard, and they all seemed responsive no matter what application or feature happened to be running at the time.

The Streak 7’s screen, with an 800 by 480 resolution, seems a bit dim, compared with the Samsung Galaxy Tab’s 1024 by 600 resolution. RIM has claimed its PlayBook’s resolution will match the Tab’s, which means the Streak 7 could find itself lagging in the category come the next few quarters. Nor was the Streak 7’s viewing angles particularly ample: unless you stare at the screen head-on, or at the slightest angle, it becomes unacceptably dark.

If the Streak 7’s hardware has an Achilles Heel, it’s the 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. The software is Android standard, with the ability to granularly adjust for picture quality, white balance, etc. No matter what the setting and lighting conditions, though, the resulting images often appeared muddy or washed-out. The camera module’s positioning on the upper-left portion of the Streak’s frame also made for some awkward centering.

As with the original Streak, the camera’s bright spot—so to speak—is the camcorder, and its ability to shoot 720p video. Uploading both still images and video to Picasa, Facebook, Gmail and Twitter is a snap.

Software

Software-wise, Dell offers the same “Stage” user interface as its original Streak. As soon as you start up the device, you’re offered a set of screens, accessible by swiping left or right, which includes Home, Web, E-mail, Social, and Music. The icons within these screens are enclosed within a graphical interface meant to evoke an old-style theater. Aesthetically, it looks far better on a 7-inch screen than on a 5-incher, but most users will likely swipe right to Android’s applications screen.

Thanks to the Streak 7’s dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra processor, applications and games run with nary a stutter. I played games such as Gun Bros and Asphalt 5 for 90 minutes or more at a stretch, without the back of the device becoming more than just a little warm, and with no slowdown. Combined with the T-Mobile 4G connection, downloading and opening Web pages and running video was likewise a speedy experience. Inevitably, though, that speed costs power: over a few days’ consistent testing, I needed anywhere from two hours to four hours to drain a full-battery charge.

Which brings us to the subject of Android 2.2—or rather, the increasingly desperate need for Android 3.0. Or more specifically, the need for Google to offer a version of Android not only optimized for tablet applications (done, once Honeycomb is pushed into the ecosystem), but also tweaked for tablet-caliber power management.

More than once, I’ve run a third-party application or game only to find it sucking away at the tablet’s battery like a particularly famished vampire, and when you navigate away from said program, there’s no indicator or guarantee that it isn’t still running in the background. Say what you will about the drawbacks of the “walled garden” model advocated by Apple of Microsoft—at least you’re assured of a certain quality level. If Google and its partners can impose a greater degree of order on Android Marketplace, and tweak how those applications interact with Android, then the Marketplace could conceivably gain the cachet it needs to battle more heartily against Apple’s App Store.

In addition, the Streak 7 crashed on me three times over the testing period when running applications. In each instance, I needed to perform a hard restart. Whether this is the fault of Android or the application is an open question. Nonetheless, those crashes contributed greatly to the sense of Android needing another polish. Hopefully, Google will decide to push out Honeycomb sooner rather than later.

For business users, the Streak 7 offers Quickoffice, calendar, and integrated GPS leveraging Google Maps for on-the-road navigation. As with the original Streak, syncing Exchange is an exercise in pure aggravation, although integration with a Google account was the usual sync. The seven-inch screen meant the virtual keyboard is better used in portrait mode, at least for those with smaller hands, and Swype is available for those who like it. Having just tested Windows Phone 7 and its Office hub, the experience with the Streak 7 left me wishing for Microsoft to finally produce a tablet-optimized version of Office 2007 or 2010; it would certainly make porting and editing documents that much easier.

Conclusion

With its 7-inch screen and powerful processor, Dell’s Streak 7 removes the ambiguities that surrounded its smaller predecessor. In addition, the Streak 7 feels a bit more polished than the original Streak—although its screen resolution and battery life leave much to be desired.

Presumably, the future upgrade to Honeycomb will eliminate some of the quirks associated with Android 2.2, and perhaps improve the battery power to the point where it’s worthy of that speedy dual-core processor. Until that day, though, the Streak 7 may have some trouble distinguishing itself in the 7-inch tablet market, especially when placed head-to-head against the Samsung Galaxy Tab or RIM PlayBook.

This update has started going out for unlocked devices way back in November of last year, however those who bought their Streaks from AT&T in the USA or Rogers in Canada have had to wait, and wait, and then wait some more.

At the beginning of December, it looked like Dell was ready to release the update for AT&T Streak tablet/smartphones, but then pulled it at the last moment, and a week later we heard that the update would be out in January.

Also read: Video walkthrough: AT&T Dell Streak running Dell’s Froyo Android 2.2 Upgrade

Thad didn’t happen, and here we are, almost at the end of February, with Dell announcing yet again that the update has started going out. This time for devices purchased from both AT&T and Rogers. Let’s hope you won’t read another “Dell pulled the update” post tomorrow.

The update is of the over-the-air variety, meaning that your Streak 5 should notify you of the update. After that, just follow the on-screen instructions, it’s easy. Be aware though that this looks like it’s going to be a staggered release, as always with OTA affairs. That means that the wait may not be over for you, since it may take many days before your Streak finally decides to offer you the update.

A few days, or maybe even a couple of weeks, though, is nothing compared to the months and months that AT&T and Rogers customers that are Streak owners have had to wait up until now, so never mind the wait and start celebrating!

Sure, newer Android tablets are out, and they’re running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, but… at least your device is half-smartphone! And… that’s something, right?
The Streak 5 is made with high quality materials, has a sharp display, can make phone calls yet it fits in a large pocket.

We have the AT&T version of the Dell Streak, and as many owners know, AT&T has been glacially slow at the approval process for the Android 2.2 Froyo update. Dell ships unlocked Streaks running 2.2 and they have a free downloadable upgrade to 2.2 for unlocked Streaks that shipped with Android 1.6 Donut (as did the AT&T Streak).

With some tinkering, you can get that 2.2 upgrade for unlocked US Dell Streak smartphones on your AT&T locked tablet. It's a little more complex than some other ROM hacking and upgrading processes for Android devices though. We'll follow up with a post that has the deets.

Even if you're not up to flashing 2.2 via the hacking method, check out our video walkthrough of Froyo on the AT&T Streak. You'll see what you're in for, and it's mostly excellent stuff, though we do miss some of Dell's OS 1.6 customizations of keys apps. The Streak with 2.2 runs Dell's Stage UI and it has Flash 10.1 as well as a bundle of useful apps. We expect most of these apps except the CoPilot demo, to make it onto the official AT&T 2.2 release. When the update is available, it should be a simple over-the-air 160 meg download as it is for the unlocked version. And yes, it's definitely faster with Froyo and Quadrant scores go up to 880 with no tweaking.

As most of you Dell Streak owners know, the Dell Streak Android 2.2 Update has gone live in the US last week. Also the lucky owners of an unlocked Dell Streak purchased from EU ( baseband ends in 00 ) have been able to update to Froyo.

All good and well, right ? Not so much as a lot of users have complained about the fact that the Dell Streak Android 2.2 Update caused their device to perform poorly.

If you’re Dell Streak is one of those affected you’ll be happy to know that XDA member smokku has released an Android 2.2 Froyo Performance Fix that reportedly fixes the lag and even leads to higher Quadrant scores.

Dell Streak: Android 2.2 Froyo Performance Fix

This Dell Streak Android 2.2 Fix installs a custom kernel, custom build.prop and a post_boot.sh script tweaked to increase the performance. The fix won’t erase your system, user-data or anything else for that matter.

For the install instructions of the Dell Streak Android 2.2 Performance Fix visit the official thread on xda-developers site (live link). It’s recommended to browse through the entire thread, as more valuable info can be found.

Dell has announced that, starting December 8th, US based customers can get their hands on the cherry red Dell Streak, as well on the 32GB and Android 2.2 ( pre-installed ) versions of Dell’s smartphone. Dell will also start selling unlocked Dell Streaks on the same date ( for more info check our previous, linked article ).

StreakSmart has compiled a list of the confirmed Dell Streak devices that can currently upgrade to the official Android 2.2, so you might want to check that out to see if someone with the same version like you has tried upgrading.

After some problems ( no one was initially able to successfully complete the update process ) Dell has released another version of the update.pkg file that, according to numerous users, works.

And here comes the good part…the Dell Streak Android 2.2 Froyo Update works not only for the AT&T provided phones, but also for Dell Streaks all over the world. There is one catch though, the Android 2.2 update works only if your baseband ends with 00.

Dell Streak US Android 2.2 Update Working On All Baseband 00 Streaks

So if you’re one of the proud owners of a Dell Streak from At&T, you can wait for Dell and the carrier to send the update OTA, or you can download the Dell Streak Android 2.2 update from: http://mobileupdate.dell.com/?version=GAUSB1A110100 ( input this URL in your Dell Streak’s browser )

If you’re an international owner of a Dell Streak phone, you first need to check your baseband. You can find your Streak’s baseband under Settings > About Phone. If it ends in 00 then you’re in luck…go to the URL listed a bit earlier ( via your Streak’s browser ) and enjoy the Android 2.2 Froyo OS.

Basebands ending in 00 are for unlocked Dell Streak smartphones that have no carrier-specific branding and have been purchased direct from Dell in EU. So if you purchased your Dell Streak from Ebay or other sources, you might be in luck.

Dell Streak is available in the US via AT&T for $300 ( with a 2 year contract ). An unlocked version is supposed to arrive in US in the coming weeks, with Android 2.2 pre-installed.

The Dell Streak Froyo 2.2 Android update is not available to download from the dell community support site (UK Only). The update for USA and Canada is coming sometimes next week when dell start selling the unlocked dell streak in the States and Canada. Below are the necessary links you need. Please backup your dell streak before you do anything.

Q&A with dell's support representative:

Q. Where can I download the Open Source code for Streak Froyo?

A: The update is available to download here (http://support.us.dell.com/support/opensource/Default.aspx) OR Direct link (OR direct link (http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_309_11548_00.pkg)

Q. What if I buy my Streak in Japan, Korea or Singapore? Will it have Froyo preinstalled?

A. Yes, Streaks purchased in Japan, Korea or Singapore will have Froyo preinstalled.

Q. Where is the link to the Dell Mobile Sync software?

A. It is available on the Dell support site: (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=TBLT_STRK&os=ANDGL&osl=en&catid=&impid)

Q. What if I don’t want to use the Dell Stage Interface?

A. You can remove it by holding down your finger on the widget shortcut and choosing the delete option.

Q. Can I run the update, even if I don’t get the official notice, by copying the URL from someone else’s device?

A. No, the final link to download the 2.2 Froyo update will be non-functional unless the browsing session is initiated via the software update mechanism on the Streak device. This is because the software update application in the device communicates with the OTA update server to authenticate the update session. The link to the update is dynamically set to download the correct software package based on the device that is connecting to the update server. Please wait for the software update notice to display on the device itself, when your version of the software is ready for the upgrade. You can continue to check for updates manually by going to Menu->Settings->About device->System Updates which will connect to the update server and correctly check for an update.

Q. Why is UK getting Froyo update before US?

A. Technically, that is not true. I'd like to clarify a rumor that got started Friday because of two tweets from UK customers. They had received an update message in error last Friday. I followed up with the team that deploys the updates and found out a small set of devices may have received a “Software Update is available” notice but when they selected it, they were directed to a webpage that indicated “No software updates available at this time.” Shortly after I sent out the apology tweets to the two users, I got an update from the deployment team apologizing for the brief glitch. They also noted that the issue was fixed and no further devices would receive notices until the actual update was turned on. This OTA update is rolling out in phases to different groups of customers. Although I can’t share the exact scheduling, I can say that this week folks who were part of the US Beta testing group will be some of the first to receive the update. Then, folks in Europe with unlocked devices will start to receive the update.
